This page explains what No Noisy Neighbors stores about you, why, and for how long. It describes what the forum software actually does.

What we store

  • Your account: username, email address and a password hash (Argon2id; we never store or see your password). Your email address is never shown publicly.
  • Your profile: anything you choose to fill in, such as a bio, website, location, the host you use, a signature and an avatar.
  • Your posts: everything you post, with its edit history. Earlier versions of edited posts are visible to moderators.
  • Private messages: readable by the people in the conversation. Moderators can read a message only when someone in the conversation reports it.
  • Likes, watched threads and notifications, so the site can show and send them.
  • IP addresses, to stop spam and abuse:
    • the address you signed up from and the last address you used, on your account;
    • the address each post was made from, kept for 180 days and then cleared;
    • for each device you are signed in on, its address and browser name, kept until you sign out or after 30 days without use. You can see and end these sessions in Settings.
  • Rate-limit records (for example failed logins), kept for 2 days.
  • Uploaded images are re-encoded when you upload them, which removes camera data such as location (EXIF).

Who else sees it

  • At sign-up, your email address and IP address are checked against StopForumSpam (sent to api.stopforumspam.org) to block known spam accounts.
  • Email from the forum is sent through our own mail server.
  • When a post contains a link, our server may fetch that page once to show its title and short description under the post. The request comes from our server, not your browser, and sends nothing about you.
  • If you turn on browser notifications, your browser's push service (run by your browser maker) delivers them. The message content is encrypted.
  • We do not sell data, and we use no advertising, tracking or analytics services.

Cookies and local storage

  • One session cookie, set only when you log in or open a page with a form (such as the sign-up or login page). It is needed to keep you signed in and to protect forms.
  • Your choice of light or dark theme and unsent drafts are kept in your browser's local storage, not on our servers (drafts you save while signed in are also kept on the server until you post or clear them).

Your rights

  • Export your data: Settings > Your data gives you a copy of your profile, posts and messages.
  • Delete your account: Settings > Your data. Your personal details are removed and your posts remain under an anonymous name.
  • You can change your email address, and turn emails off, in Settings.
